Aging At Home

A Desire For Home

Nothing is more intrinsic to the human condition than a desire for home. From the Wizard of Oz mantra “There’s no place like home!” to John Denver’s classic chorus “Country roads, take me home,” home and family are at the core of our deepest desires and the source of our sense of security. It’s no wonder, then, that according to AARP’s “Home and Community Preferences” survey, 3 out of every 4 adults 50 or older want to stay in their homes as they age. After all, this is a place where they have lived for years, sometimes decades, filled with cherished memories and connected to a community of beloved neighbors and friends. So, what can we do to help our older loved ones have this desire of their hearts?

Home Modifications for Elderly

First, we can take a look at home modifications that enhance safety. This can look like anything from removing rugs which pose a tripping hazard, to purchasing a shower seat, to installing a wheelchair ramp and additional handrails. Utilizing alarm devices can also provide an additional layer of safety. If you are caring for your mother who suffers from dementia and is prone to wander off, you can invest in door alarms that let you know when she has opened the front door. There are also bed pad or floor mat alarms to alert you when your elderly loved one is trying to get out of bed or leave a room, so you can be there to help prevent falls or more wandering.

Home Based Services

Home-based services can provide further support. For health care, this includes telemedicine appointments, home visits from physical and occupational therapists, and hiring home health aides. Additionally, outsourcing chores by employing housekeepers, gardeners, and using meal and grocery delivery services provide an easy way for your elderly loved one to maintain as much independence as possible.

Local Support

Aging at home doesn’t have to be expensive, either. You can pay the neighbor kid to mow the lawn, rely on trusted friends from your church to help with home maintenance and housekeeping, or free community programs that help the elderly and their caregivers. For example, Orange County has “Aging in Place” support services that include website links to an in-home assistance directory and food resources for free or low-cost groceries and meals. With these resources at your fingertips, you can feel well supported in your efforts to help your loved one stay in their home.
